AZTEC – Hunter Ferrell, Gabe Shim and Brantley Frans dominated the weekend action at Aztec Speedway, each completing two-night sweeps in their respective classes during a packed slate of racing Friday and Saturday.
Ferrell ruled the IMCA Hobby Stock division, taking the checkered flag in Friday’s 15-lap feature before returning Saturday to capture a 20-lap feature victory over runner-up Kyler Duggins.
In the Dwarf/Mod Lite class, Shim outmaneuvered the field both nights, driving his No. 27 car to back-to-back 15-lap feature wins. Meanwhile, young gun Brantley Frans swept the Youth Sport Compacts division, winning both the Friday and Saturday main events ahead of Nicky McCormick, who finished second on both nights.
The premier IMCA Modified division saw two different drivers claim glory. On Friday, Regan Tafoya took advantage of his front-row starting spot to secure the 20-lap feature win over Aaron Spangler. Spangler exacted his revenge Saturday night, charging from the ninth starting position to win the feature while Tyrone Yazzie took second. Tafoya’s bid for a sweep ended early Saturday with a ninth-place DNF.
The IMCA Stock Car features also produced a pair of winners. Jeramy Hughes took the opening-night victory on Friday, holding off RC Combs and Trevor Combs. On Saturday, Josh Cain put on a passing clinic, slicing through the field from the 11th starting spot to win the 20-lap main event ahead of Ron Brewer.
In the IMCA Northern SportMod class, Brody Spangler held off Kasyn Mathews to win Friday’s 15-lap feature. Saturday night belonged to Danny Concelman, who bounced back from a tough Friday outing to win the 20-lap main event, with Brody Spangler finishing second.
The IMCA Sport Compact division featured tight battles between Clay Tillia and John Frans. Tillia took the win Friday night with Ted Neergaard in second and Frans in seventh. On Saturday, Frans turned the tables, driving to the front to win the 15-lap feature ahead of Tillia.
