FARMINGTON – The Farmington High School tennis team opened the season with an impressive win in the Statewide Tournament on Friday in Albuquerque.

Competing against seven other schools from across New Mexico, the Scorpions won the tournament scoring 56 points, just a couple of points ahead of runner-up Albuquerque Academy.

“Being competitive with Academy is a good sign for us,” said Farmington coach Pat McGrath. “They have been the state champions in Class 4A the past four years.”

Farmington’s Marley Deswood won the No. 1 singles flight, defeating Emeline Doscher 6-2, 6-1. Mya Beck won the No. 3 singles flight, beating teammate Izzy Kelley 6-2, 6-2.

Tessa McCarville and Syuri Garcia won the No. 3 doubles flight match against Clovis, 8-0.

Piedra Vista finished in fourth place with five points.

Farmington will be in Albuqerque this upcoming weekend for the Quad Plus Event at the Jerry Cline Tennis Center.
