A research project that became an opportunity to turn curiosity, compassion and personal experience into scientific discovery has earned San Juan College student, June Loukinas, second place at the International Science and Engineering Fair.

Her research explores whether simulated microgravity could improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy. After losing her uncle to stage four cancer, Loukinas began asking questions that would eventually take her from a local research lab to the international stage of scientific competition.

Competing against more than 1,700 young scientists and engineers from around the world, Loukinas was recognized for her work in the Biomedical and Health Sciences category, one of the competition’s largest and most competitive areas.

“It was a huge dream,” Loukinas said. “I was bawling my eyes out when I won.”

As a SJC dual-credit student, Loukinas graduated with both her high school diploma and an associate degree in general education, demonstrating the opportunities available to students who pursue college coursework while still in high school.

Loukinas developed skills in coding, engineering design and advanced mathematics while navigating the challenges of accessing specialized laboratory equipment and research facilities. Along the way, she found support through mentors and resources at SJC and partner institutions.

Outside the laboratory, Loukinas serves as an ambassador for Dress a Girl Around the World, a nonprofit organization that creates handmade dresses for children worldwide.

“I enjoy science, but I also enjoy doing something creative and fun now and then,” she said. “That’s another outlet for me.”

This fall, she will continue her education at the University of Colorado Boulder through a five-year bachelor’s and master’s program focused on biology, aerospace engineering and bioastronautics. Her education is supported by the Daniels Fund Scholarship, a competitive full-ride scholarship recognizing leadership, character and commitment to community.

For Loukinas, her experience at ISEF was about more than the award.

“It was definitely humbling,” she said. “You’re talking to people from everywhere, and you see all these projects that are just incredible. It reminds you of the difference you can make in the world through scientific study.”

Her advice to future researchers is simple: when you’re passionate, you will find the resources and outlets, or they’ll come to you.
