Gavin Francis, a senior at San Juan College High School, has been awarded a Jiffy Lube of New Mexico scholarship as he prepares to continue his education and pursue a career in pharmacy.
The scholarship is part of Jiffy Lube New Mexico’s 2025-2026 “What Drives You” teen driver program, which recognizes high school students across the state for academic achievement, career goals and community involvement. Francis was among four recipients selected by a committee, and will receive a $1,500 scholarship.
Francis plans to study pharmacy at the University of New Mexico and is working toward completing his associate degree in prepharmacy.
Since its launch in 2007, the Jiffy Lube of New Mexico “What Drives You” program has provided more than $140,000 in scholarships to high school students statewide.
As part of the program, applicants submitted a 500-word essay describing their inner drive. Finalists also submitted a short video expanding on their essays.
In his video essay, Francis said having the knowledge and ability to give back to his community is what drives him.
“Growing up near the Navajo Nation and interning at a local pharmacy I grew familiar with the many medical issues that the Navajo people face,” he said.
Francis said his grandfather’s heart surgery strengthened his desire to pursue a career that would help improve others’ lives.
Winners were selected by a scholarship committee.
