When the San Juan College Film Club team heard their group name, Rouge 5, announced as the winner at the Film Four Corners competition, it was both surprising and rewarding.
The competition challenges participants to create a short film within a limited time frame, pushing students to think quickly, collaborate effectively and execute their ideas with precision.
For the San Juan College students, the experience served as both a creative challenge and a professional development opportunity.
The team was assigned the sports genre and began brainstorming ideas that would be both practical and engaging. What began as a concept with a serious tone evolved into a creative process in which the team discovered opportunities to incorporate humor.
By leaning into those comedic elements, the students created a film that connected with audiences and stood out among competitors.
“This ability to adapt creatively is a key component of successful filmmaking and one that SJC students demonstrated throughout the project,” the college said in a news release.
The group faced several challenges while producing a film under strict time constraints, including tight deadlines, technical issues and the need for quick decision-making across all stages of production.
Time management proved to be the biggest obstacle. From writing and filming to editing, every step required focus, efficiency and trust among team members. Roles were assigned based on individual strengths, allowing students to contribute effectively while also supporting one another when needed.

Despite the pressure, the collaborative environment helped the team stay motivated and problem solve in real time.
Following their first-place win, the San Juan College Film Club is looking ahead with plans to build on the momentum by creating new projects, participating in additional competitions and hosting events that further strengthen the local filmmaking community.
The film club brings together students and community members who are passionate about storytelling and want to gain hands-on experience in film production. Members can explore a variety of roles, including directing, acting, editing and behind-the-scenes production.
This approach allows students to build portfolios, develop technical skills and gain confidence in their creative abilities. According to the college, through events, competitions and collaborative projects, the club continues to attract new members and expand its impact.
