FARMINGTON – A busy week in high school sports features several local and area basketball teams wrapping up their non-district campaigns, and one of the top teams in the state competing in tournament action in Albuquerque.

The Kirtland Central girls basketball team, in the middle of a six-game win streak, will tangle with some of the top teams in New Mexico in the APS Metro Tournament, opening with a showdown against Highland on Thursday night.

In addition to the defending Class 4A state champions, each of the top four teams in Class 5A, Sandia, Hobbs, Rio Rancho and Volcano Vista are all scheduled to compete in one of the most challenging tournaments of the season.

Piedra Vista’s boys basketball team will compete in the Gallup Tournament beginning Thursday, while the Panthers girls team will face off with the top-ranked Gallup squad on the road Wednesday night.

Local and area wrestling teams are headed to Socorro this weekend for the Lady Warrior Invitational and the Sammy Vivian Invitational while Kirtland Central High will be hosting the Bronco Invite on Saturday.
