SOCORRO – Kirtland Central High School golfer Hayden Dan shot a 10-over-par 154 to capture solo second place in the Girls Overall division at the New Mexico/West Texas Junior Amateur Championship, which wrapped up Friday at the New Mexico Tech Golf Course.
Hayden Dan opened the multi-round tournament with a stellar 3-over 75 to share the first-round lead with eventual champion Mia Reyes of El Paso, Texas. She followed it up with a 79 in the second round to lock down a runner-up finish, ending the tournament just three strokes behind Reyes, who won the event at 7-over 151.
Also representing Kirtland, older sister Dallas Dan shaved three strokes off her opening-round score, carding an 85 on the final day following an opening 88. Dallas Dan finished with a 29-over 173, finishing just outside the tournament’s cut line.
Reyes won the tournament with rounds of 75 and 76. Ada Schmedes of Tijeras and Carly Moore of Las Cruces tied for third place at 15-over 159, while Albuquerque’s Parker Wilson took fifth at 22-over 166.
Angelo Martinez of Albuquerque fired a 5-under-par 139 to secure the Boys Overall title at the New Mexico/West Texas Junior Amateur Championship at the New Mexico Tech Golf Course.
Martinez showcased impressive consistency over the multi-round tournament, carding a 3-under 69 in the opening round before sealing the victory with a 2-under 70 on Friday.
Jonah Utash of Bosque Farms pushed Martinez late, putting together a strong run to finish in solo second place at 3-under 141. Utash opened with a 70 and closed the tournament with a 71, finishing two strokes off the lead.
Socorro’s own Isaiah Silva leveraged his home-course familiarity to claim third place. Silva finished at 1-over 145 after registering a 72 on the opening day and a 73 in the final round.
Dyson Wright of Alamogordo finished comfortably in solo fourth place at 4-over 148, turning in identical rounds of 74 on both days of competition.
Rounding out the top five, El Paso, Texas, golfers Alex Jasso and Jonah Reyes finished in a tie for fifth place at 8-over 152. Jasso surged early with an opening-round 71 before slipping with an 81 on Friday, while Reyes shot a 75 and a 77 to match his cross-town competitor.
