The Farmington Civic Center will mark its 50th anniversary this year, with the city of Farmington planning two public events in April to commemorate the milestone.
Since its opening in 1976, the Civic Center has served as a regional venue for arts and entertainment in the Four Corners and has hosted touring and local performances, as well as community events.
The anniversary celebration will begin with a musical showcase, followed later in the month by a themed event reflecting the decade in which the center opened.
The 50th anniversary showcase will take place at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 10, with doors opening at 7 p.m. The free concert will feature a variety of performances representing different musical styles presented at the venue over the years, with open seating available to the public.
Performers include violinist Abigail Baker; Ga Greine, a Celtic duo; Three Views of a Secret, a jazz and fusion group; and Caliente Chorus, a vocal ensemble performing Broadway and Americana selections.
Scott Michlin and Devin Neeley will serve as emcees. Concessions and a cash bar provided by Clancy’s will be available in the lobby.
The “Groovy Since 1976” 50th anniversary party will be held from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, April 25. The ticketed event will feature a 1970s theme, including music, a costume contest and games. Food and beverages, including a cash bar, will be available. Tickets are $15.
“The Civic Center has been our community’s stage for 50 years,” says Christa Chapman, director of Cultural Affairs. “Whether you saw your first performance here in the ’70s or a musical that made you jump out of your seat for an ovation last year, we want you to come back and celebrate the legacy we’ve built together.”
