A Farmington man with a long history of committing aggravated assault was arrested for pulling a knife on, and threatening a couple, at Berg Park in Farmington.
Jason Blackie, 52, has five previous convictions of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one conviction of battery on a health care worker, according to a pretrial detention motion filed by the San Juan County District Attorney’s Office.
“He has presented a danger to the community and continues to do so,” the motion stated.
Blackie has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in connection to a July 11 assault in Berg Park.
Farmington Police were called at 6:38 p.m. to the park in response to Blackie reportedly pulling a “Smith and Wesson foldable pocket knife” out and threatening a man and woman, who went for a walk in the park and were resting on the grass, according to the affidavit for arrest warrant.
Blackie allegedly walked up to the couple and said, “I’m going to scalp someone,” and then, reportedly came toward them with the knife, while saying, “I ain’t scared of nobody,” the affidavit said.
It also was alleged that Blackie told the couple “This is Native land, get the (expletive) out of here,” the affidavit said.
The man, whom Blackie pulled the knife on, told police “he felt very threatened for his life due to Mr. Blackie’s aggressive nature, threats of scalping, close proximity, and the knife being pointed at him,” according to the affidavit.
When police took Blackie into custody and questioned him, he reportedly claimed to not understand his Miranda rights, but later said he did understand them, the affidavit said.
He then allegedly admitted to having “pulled a knife,” but told police it was because one of the men “tried to take my bike away,” according to the affidavit.
Blackie also claimed he had been “grabbed,” but police noted there were no injuries found on him, the affidavit said.
Blackie is being held in the San Juan County Detention Center until his pretrial detention motion hearing, which has not been set.
