FARMINGTON – A total of seven Piedra Vista High School seniors formally announced their intent to extend their athletic and academic careers at the next level, signing with several different colleges across the region.

Zack Zweschper, Kade Aragon, and brothers Alexis and Alejandro Hernandez each signed letters of intent to attend New Mexico Military Institute, where they will look to also continue their baseball careers.

The quartet of Piedra Vista baseball players have played an integral role in the Panthers position in a tie for first place in the current District 1-5A standings.

The NMMI college baseball team is in the midst of a very impressive season, currently 33-11 overall (17-7 Western Junior College Athletic Conference). The Broncos are in fourth place behind Midland College in the conference standings and are coached by Chris Cook, who’s led the team since 2012 and has coached over 70 players who have gone on to play professional baseball, including the six who have made it to the major leagues.

Midland College recently announced the signing of Piedra Vista senior JW Bayless, who not only has played a significant role for the Panthers, but has appeared in each of the last two Connie Mack World Series.

Last summer, representing the Southern California Renegades, Bayless was one of the most efficient pitchers in the tournament, with a three-inning shutout performance out of the bullpen in a win over the Midland Redskins.

Bayless joins a Midland program that is currently ranked No. 2 in the National Junior College Athletic Association. With an overall record of 38-3, the Chaparrals are one of the most respected baseball programs in America, have made several postseason appearances, including a national runner-up finish in 2014.

Cody Clugston, another vital part of the Piedra Vista baseball success this season, also recently agreed to terms to play next year for Webster University in Missouri.

The Gorloks, led by 19-year head coach Bill Kurich, are currently 20-11 overall this season (14-1 in the St. Louis Intercollegaite Athletic Conference).

Nick Halvorson, who was a major contributor for the Panthers on the football field last season, has also signed his letter of intent to join Lyon College in Arkansas.

The Scots finished last season with a record of 2-7 overall. The team plays in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III.
