The Bloomfield School District is hosting the Bobcat Back to School Bash that has connected families in former years with resources both in the community and district.
Melodee Velasquez, school and family liaison, said the event has grown from a school supply distribution event to a resource event bringing nonprofit organizations, companies, school board members, and administrators to families.
“It’s a good opportunity for everybody to get out there and collaborate together,” she said. “Instead of making it a time to where they’re just standing in line to receive a backpack, we kind of grew it into more of an experience.”
This will be the fourth year of the event, with the district distributing over 700 backpacks in 2025, Velasquez said.
According to Velazquez, inflation has played a role in what families are struggling to pay for, including, gas, utilities and rent.
“The cost of groceries,” she said. “We do see a need all around for basic needs.”
This year, there will be added entertainment including Ballet Folklorico dancers.
Velasquez said sharing community resources and building excitement for the new school year go hand in hand because of the support students will need once school starts.
“We’re there to help and support these kids throughout the school year,” she said. “We have new students or even our returning students – they’re not really aware of what resources are available. Just so they know that they have a constant line of support, some things get difficult during the summer time.”
The back-to-school event is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. July 27 at Mesa Alta Junior High School at 329 N. Bergin Lane, Bloomfield.
