The Bureau of Land Management Farmington Field Office is offering permits for personal use fire wood to the San Juan County residents at $12 per cord of dead and downed trees.

The BLM considers a cord of wood to be a stack of cut wood that stands 4 feet high and 4 feet wide, by 8 feet long.

According to a news release from the BLM, it is important to note that the permits only allow for the cutting of dead piñon and juniper trees, and cutting green trees or any other unauthorized tree is strictly prohibited.

BLM fuelwood permits can be purchased in person at the Farmington Field Office, 6251 College Blvd., Suite A, and online at forestproducts.blm.gov.

Failure to obtain a valid permit can result in fines exceeding $300, and the confiscation of equipment used for illegal woodcutting. Permit holders must follow the reclamation offices stipulations for harvesting fire wood including but not limited to:

Cut fuelwood to a maximum length of 6 feet.Harvest any completely dead piñon or juniper trees, including both downed wood and dead standing trees, leaving stumps no taller than 6 inches.Use power saws equipped with a working exhaust system and a spark arrester.Carry your permit and be ready to show it to BLM staff or law enforcement officers.Avoid harvesting within 200 feet of roads, water bodies, or recreational sites, unless your permit allows.Securely attach one load ticket for each specified amount of product during transportation, making sure it is easily visible from the rear of the vehicle.Check current regional fire restrictions at https://www.blm.gov/programs/fire/fire-restrictions before starting any harvesting activity and follow them.

Maps of designated woodcutting areas and other important information will be provided at the time of permit purchase. If you are purchasing a permit online, access to a printer is vital, as you will be required to print your permit, maps, instructions, and haul tags.
