As part of its “Unspun Tales: Sheep in San Juan County” special exhibit and programming, the Aztec Museum & Pioneer Village will present speaker Jon Wallace at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16.
Wallace is the author of “The Sheep Industry of Territorial New Mexico: Livestock, Land & Dollars,” which received the Fray Francisco Atanacio Dominguez award for historical work on New Mexico and the Southwest Borderlands presented by the Historical Society of New Mexico.
His presentation draws from his book, and covers the central role of sheep in the territory’s economy and their important place in the lives of all New Mexicans, both rich and the poor. Sheep have had a significant role in the economy and culture of San Juan County.
Wallace is retired physicist at Los Alamos National Laboratory who also holds several degrees, including a master’s degree in history from the University of New Mexico. This is his first time speaking at the Aztec Museum and his book will be available for purchase and signing.
The program is free and open to the public. The museum opens at 4:30 p.m. that day so visitors can enjoy the Pioneer Village and sheep exhibit in the main museum building before the presentation. Guests should park in the municipal lot behind the museum, 125 N. Main Ave., off Park Avenue.
