AZTEC – R.C. Combs and Nicky McCormick headlined a packed opening weekend of dirt-track racing at Aztec Speedway, sweeping their respective divisions during two nights of feature races on Friday and Saturday.
Combs dominated the IMCA Stock Car class, taking the checkered flag in Friday’s 20-lap main event ahead of Herman Garcia and Josh Cain.
He repeated the feat Saturday night, holding off Cain and Darell Cordary to complete the weekend sweep. In the Youth Sport Compacts division, McCormick drove to victory in Friday’s 10-lap feature and outlasted the field again on Saturday to secure his second win of the weekend.
The rest of the weekend lineup saw high-stakes parity across the remaining divisions.
In the IMCA Northern SportMod class, Brody Spangler claimed Friday’s 20-lap feature, beating Tyler Johnson and Danny Concelman to the line. On Saturday, Tyke Miles navigated the field to take the victory, with Concelman runner-up and Scott Clay placing third.
The IMCA Modifieds featured a flip-flop at the top of the podium between Regan Tafoya and Rob Moseley. Tafoya captured Friday’s 25-lap main event, besting Lukas Tellez and Camron Spangler. On Saturday, Moseley capitalized on his front-row starting spot to take the win over Michael Egurola and Tyrone Yazzie.
Kyler Duggins and Hunter Ferrell split the weekend honors in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Ferrell outdueled Joe Peterson to win Friday’s 20-lap race, while Duggins took the checkered flag on Saturday over Chad Nelson.
In the IMCA Sport Compacts, Dave Rogers won Friday’s feature ahead of Coral Tillia and Cody Witcher. Saturday’s 20-lap main went to John Frans, who beat Katie Barthel to the finish line.
Michael Phay secured Friday’s Dwarf/Mod Lite feature victory over John Foster and Rafe O’Brien. Foster bounced back on Saturday night, capturing the division win ahead of Bryan McCanley.
This was the first racing action at Aztec Speedway since the track stalled its 2025 season shortly before Memorial Day last spring.
The track was in the early phase of its 73rd season of racing when it was shut down. Prior to the start of this season, the track’s facilities saw a massive upgrade, which included improvements to grandstand seating areas, billboard signage as well as the track surface which included new clay overlays.
Aztec Speedway will host its third racing program of the season on Friday, May 29, featuring a full slate of dirt-track action across seven divisions.
The scheduled program includes racing in the IMCA Modified, IMCA Northern SportMod, IMCA Stock Car, IMCA Hobby Stock, and IMCA Sport Compact classes. The Dwarf/Mod Lite and Youth Sport Compacts divisions will also be on the night’s event card.
