The Aztec Municipal School District will host a first-ever district wide back-to-school event on Thursday, Aug. 13, at Fred Cook Stadium with a goal in connecting families to district and community resources ahead of the school year.
Lauren Laws, superintendent, said the event will feature 63 booths from sites and services within the district to business partners. Families can expect booths to be interactive and informative, a requirement set by the district, according to Laws.
The district also will be launching a formal mascot and taking submissions to name it.
Kindergarten to sixth grade typically see a large turn out in school site open houses, said Laws.
“I think where we were lacking was people in our own community or even within our schools just not being aware of some of the things we offer,” she said.
By hosting a district wide event, Laws said there is an opportunity to highlight pathways that may be overlooked.
“It’s a reminder that we’re a team, we can’t do this alone,” she said.
This year, the district’s goal is consistency, according to Laws, who will be going into her third year as superintendent.
“This is a great way to begin that and show that we’re here to serve students. We’re here just to help – to serve our community,” she said.
With the Board of Education working in the summer on the Aztec Schools Strategic Plan, Laws said administrators were in a good place in July as they returned.
“It feels like we’re all moving forward in the same direction,” she said. “We all know the end goal – being on the same page has come to fruition this summer.”
