The local Libertarian Party will continue a yearlong trend of having strong speakers at its monthly “Liberty Forum” gathering. Saturday, John McCall, a former Green Party candidate for state attorney general, will be the featured speaker. Earlier this year, the Libertarians hosted Native American activist Russell Means and Steve Bunch, a top official with the New Mexico Drug Policy Foundation. “We’ve been on a roll,” said Joseph Knight, the chairman of the state Libertarian Party.

An official of Farmington TelePrompTer Cable TV, Inc., said at Tuesday night’s Farmington City Council meeting that application has been made to the Federal Communications Commission for a variance on its non-duplication regulation in an effort to avoid having to cut Channel 4 off the air sometimes before programs are ended. … Because of a FCC non-duplicating clause, the cable TV is required to blan out Channel 4 (which comes from Albuquerque KOB, also an NBC affiliate) when the same program is being carried by KIVA. As a result of the regulation the cable system has installed a time clock that cuts off KOB often in the last few minutes of an exciting ball game, other sporting event, or program. A variance to the regulation ostensibly would permit the cable system to set the time clock for a little longer period to avoid these viewer frustrations.

Jim Eubanks had had a new tile floor installed in his popular drug store. It was twenty-five years ago when Jim covered the floor with inlaid linoleum and expected to be rich before he wore it out. He didn’t get rich so he is going to try it another twenty-five years. The first hundred years are the hard ones, Jim.

The Farmington baseball team played Cortez Sunday at that place and after an interesting game the score read 7-2 in favor of Farmington. This makes the fourth game our boys have played this season, and they have won every one. The team is managed by Ray Wynn with Bob Estes as captain. Some time ago the local businessmen raised a sum of money with which new uniforms were purchased for the team. The boys are very faithful in their practice work and are building up a strong team.

Sunday night this section was visited by the most destructive freeze we have had in many years. Monday night was also very cold, but the evidences of damage were shown by the night before. Up to that time we had a pretty fair apple, pear and cherry crop. What is left is still a guess, but it is certain that most of the crop is gone. There may be some pears and apples left, there probably is, but no one can tell how many. … Of course the berries have not been hurt, as they have not begun to bloom yet. Grapes were just putting out their foliage and buds, and all that were out were killed, but we think more foliage and fruit buds will come out on them.

The town board organized last night with Frank Pierce, chairman, and Willet Brown, treasurer. R.C. Prewitt was re-elected clerk and W.F. Paxton, marshal. A building permit has issued for a two-story brick building to C.M. Hubbard & Son.
