Historic Downtown Farmington was all about boos, costumes and sweets as hundreds of families turned out in costume for the annual Boo-Palooza event on Friday evening to celebrate Halloween.

Attendees brought their baskets for candy and tried their hand at game booths hosted by several shops and organizations.

“I think the costume and getting to see that community and all the kids and their costumes,” Willie, an attendee, said about Halloween.

Carol Farley, a Durango resident, said the kids are her favorite thing about Halloween.

“I love spending time with the family, going trick-or-treating with the kids,” said Tiana Blake of Farmington.

Maleiq Tsosie of Farmington said his favorite aspect of Halloween is, “good to dress up and having fun doing trick or treating.”

Zariah Douglas dressed as Jack Skellington, a character from Disney’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” along with her father.

Douglas did her own makeup and said watching the Disney film is a tradition every year.

Her family planned to go trick-or-treating later that night after stopping at Boo-Palooza.

A costume contest brought the best-dressed to the stage at Orchard Park in categories ranging from children to adults to groups.

Kiean Johnson, who won first place in the 6- to 9-year-old category, dressed as Titan TV Man from Skibidi Toilet.

Des’ree Johnson, his mother, said the homemade costume took three days to make and is part of an ongoing theme from previous costumes.

Johnson said the holiday is important to the family, who drove from Shiprock, and usually plan their costumes well in advance.

Caliean Pettigrew, who won first place in the 10- to 17-year-old category, made a Freddy Fazbear costume inspired by the film “Five Nights at Freddy’s.”

Pettigrew said the lore of the FNAF franchise interested him.

Amber Longoria, a veterinary technician major at San Juan College, won first place in the adult category dressed as a queen xenomorph from the motion picture “Aliens.”

Longoria said she does cosplay and recently attended the Santa Fe Comic Con.

The costume took three months to make and relied heavily on foam.
