RIO RANCHO – More than 100 high school wrestlers, from several area and local schools, will be taking part this weekend in the New Mexico Activities Association’s state wrestling championships at the Rio Rancho Events Center.

More than a dozen wrestlers from Aztec High School will be looking not only for individual titles, but also for a chance to repeat as Class 4A team champions. The Tigers have taken home the state team title 21 times dating back to 1971.

Coached by Levi Stout, Aztec High’s wrestling team will be led by returning state champion Ian Vigil, who defeated Gage Sellers of Miyamura for the 127-pound title last year and has a record of 30-8 this season competing at the 138-lb. division.

Vigil will open his bracket competition Friday as the second-ranked wrestler in the division against Lucas Marquez from Robertson High. Matthew Longdon from St. Pius, with a record this year of 39-3, is the top-seeded wrestler in the division.

In the 165-lb. division, Aztec’s Cory Douglas comes into the tournament as the number one seed with a record of 40-5 this season. Douglas will open his bracket tournament Friday against Matthew Cortez from Taos.

On the other end of the 165-lb. bracket is Kirtland Central’s Todd Robinson, ranked second in the state in the division. With an overall record this year of 42-10, Robinson is one of seven wrestlers representing the Broncos in the state tournament.

The state boys meet is divided into two classifications, with Class A through 4A wrestlers facing off against one another. The Class 5A portion of the tournament features nearly two dozen wrestlers from Farmington and Piedra Vista teams.

Meantime, a total of 34 girls wrestlers representing San Juan Couunty schools will compete in the state championships including Aztec High sophomore Emily Saiz, who brings her 27-7 record this season to the 110-lb. division. Saiz will open her bracket schedule on Friday against Bella Garcia from Atrisco Heritage.

The girls state competition puts all wrestlers in competition with one another, regardless of classification. The tournament begins Friday morning and will conclude with with championship matches set to get underway Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Kirtland Central’s Hailey Robinson will tangle with Frances Sandoval of Cobre High School to start her competition in the 145-lb. division. Robinson (38-1)
