“This looks like a winning ticket to me,” said Albert Martinez of Kirtland with a big smile after he spent $1 on a Powerball ticket Friday at a Mustang convenience store. Martinez is joining millions of other hopefuls across the nation with dreams of winning a top prize that is expected to be more than $300 million, the largest Powerball jackpot in the history of the game. The prize is determined by the number of tickets sold. … The odds are actually 80 million to 1 for a person to win the jackpot, said Nadine Guillen, public information officer for the New Mexico State Lottery.

Danny Voecks is a young man who has spent most of his summer up in the air. The Farmington High School senior would be the first to admit that it all involved a bunch of hot air. Any projected essay he might write for class this week on his vacation activity would surely be one-of-a-kind for Danny traveled through the eastern half of the United States, for pay and expenses, in a hot air balloon. Ballooning caught his fancy last year when his father, Roland, became active in the avocation which is rapidly increasing in popularity. Soon Danny earned both his private and commercial balloon pilot’s license to became at 17 one of the youngest pilots in the country. So it may have been a real coup when the Massey Ferguson Company, manufacturers of farm equipment, caught up with Danny in Farmington and hired him as one of two operators of their 50-foot diameter Bicentennial promotional hot-air balloon.

The Westminster Youth Fellowship met Sunday evening at the church where replete with weiners and marshmellows they boarded tractor and trailer for a hayride out on the La Plata road. The rain failed to dampen spirits, and everyone reported a good time. Next Sunday evening the group will meet at the church at 7:30. Cars will be provided to take them to the Randlemon home at Centerpoint where they will dine on Schmorr Sandwiches.

Unusual interest was shown by all the people of Kirtland and Fruitland when they gathered at their church house on Tuesday for the pre-school clinic held there under the auspices of the state and federal governments by their agent, the Sheppard-Towner nurse. Thirty-five children were examined, their physical condition noted by Dr. A.M. Smith, and reports will be sent out to the parents of each of the children by the nurse in charge of this work. The doctor commented on the good behavior of the children.

According to the plans formulated by Drs. G.W. Sammons and A.M. Smith, Farmington is to have one of the finest and most up to date hospitals in the Southwest. It will probably be located on the mesa to the north end of Orchard or Behrend Street, but this is a point which has not been definitely decided as yet. Work will be commenced about Sept. 1. The plans call for a building 54×34 feet in area, built of brick with a cement veneer. This will house the office, operating room, and sick rooms and will have 10 rooms in all. On the outside will be six tents with cement floors. These will be used for the treatment of diseases which can better be handled in the open air. The whole thing will be steam heated from a central plant.

Paul Arrington of Farmington, who has been commissioned by the fair association to bring a band of Navajos to the fair, writes that he will be prepared to start from the reservation early in September. The Indians are going to bring a bunch of ponies with them across country, and the trip will require several days. … He is also bringing with him a string of six running horses which he will enter in the running and especially in the relay races of the fair meeting. In addition to this, he will be entrusted with the San Juan County fruit exhibit.
