There were 13 outhouses with toilet-themed names in the 2026 Outhouse Race on Monday at the San Juan County Fair.
Kenny Reinhardt of Farmington built three of those outhouses specifically for the event. This became a hobby of his after competing in the race four years ago.
“It’s a little time consuming, and when you pull them down the road people look at you like, ‘What the hell? That’s an outhouse on wheels,’” Reinhardt said.
The wheels are one of the more difficult parts of the design, according to Reinhard, who said that is because the outhouse must roll through the traffic cones of an obstacle course.
The races are set up as a team activity with five people per team. One person rides in an outhouse while the other four push it. At each obstacle, the person riding gets out to help push and another team member hops in.
“Somebody has to be in it the whole time,” said Reinhardt, whose whole family now is involved in the races.
His daughter Aubree Reinhardt was the team captain for Fart Factory, which was painted on the side of an outhouse built by her father.
“Last year we won third place, and we got the loudest crowd,” Aubree said.
There was a large group of 4-H youth involved in the races.
Paislee Foster, 14, is a member of the Levi and Calico 4-H Club, and her team was named Herd of Turds. This was her fourth outhouse race.
“It’s fun to go up against all of the other 4-H clubs,” Foster said.
Leonardo Nevarez, 16, of Bloomfield, was participating in his first race on the Cow Pattie Club team.
“I’m excited, but I’m nervous too,” he said.
There were 10 kid teams and three adult teams that competed.
The adult first-place winner was Just Drop a Load. The kid first-place winner was Herd of Turds OG, and the second-place kid winner was Herd of Turdettes.
The Best Outhouse by crowd choice was Too Fart Too Furious.
