The New Mexico Higher Education Department is now accepting applications for the Higher Education Major Projects Fund, which supports capital improvements at public colleges and universities across the state.
Institutions have until July 17 to submit project requests to the department through the Capital Funding Request and Management System. Funding amounts vary per request to support projects addressing infrastructure needs and long-term facility planning, according to the NMHED.
The Major Projects Fund supports significant capital improvements at public colleges and universities, ensuring that campuses statewide can advance long‑term planning, address infrastructure needs and enhance student learning environments.
“For educational institutions preparing to advance major capital projects, the new application process for the Higher Education Major Projects Fund provides a clear pathway and improved tools for submitting funding requests,” said Stephanie M. Rodriguez, Higher Education Department cabinet secretary. “We appreciate the collaboration of our partners and remain committed to transparent, efficient and student-centered capital planning.”
San Juan College annually submits requests for state supports through the HED for capital projects, a spokesperson for the college said.
This summer the college is requesting funding for exterior improvements and life safety projects.
The college plans to discuss with trustees the intent to apply in the next round that will occur in May of 2027 due to the short application period and requirement of 50% project design and a documented match of 50%. The spokesperson said that means that it would require a board resolution to sell bonds in support of the project.
“We have been fortunate to receive generous state support for our capital projects and we look forward to working with them to garner some funds from HB8, the new major capital projects fund,” Edward DesPlas, San Juan College executive vice president, said.
Capital improvement projects supported through the Higher Education Major Projects Fund play a vital role in strengthening the higher education infrastructure, said the NMHED.
Improved higher education facilities will not only serve students and faculty, according to the NMHED but also provide important spaces for community engagement, workforce training, public events and regional economic development.
Modern, well‑maintained campuses ensure that those of all ages have access to safe, innovative and welcoming environments that support learning and community connection, according to the NMHED.
Applicants are encouraged to review their submissions to ensure all required documents have been uploaded.
“The release of the application and updated system represents an important step forward in supporting long-term facility planning across New Mexico’s higher education institutions,” Chief of Staff Gerald Hoehne said. “We want to ensure every eligible educational institution has the resources and guidance they need to submit strong, complete proposals.”
