San Juan County Fire and Rescue responded Tuesday to a brush fire on NM Highway 170, north of Road 1424.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office had the highway closed while crews worked the blaze. Evacuations were ordered for the area, according to a post on the San Juan County Fire & Rescue Facebook page.
“Crews are flowing lots of water at this scene and have the fire contained to about 2 acres,” the fire department stated. “There is a lot of debris that is on fire and will continue to burn and structures are involved.”
Drivers were advised to find an alternative route to avoid the area. As of 1:51 p.m., NM 170 was closed between Road 1401 and Road 1424, but had reopened with alternating traffic using one lane as of 5 p.m.
The post also said there were power lines down in the area.
“Crews will be using heavy machinery to overhaul this scene for some time this evening,” a San Juan County Fire and Rescue post stated.
Devin Neeley, San Juan County Public Relations/Film Manager, reported at 6:15 p.m. the fire, which burned 2 acres, was fully controlled and contained.
