KIRTLAND – Behind dominant performances from the hurdles to the horizontal jumps, the Bloomfield High School track and field program completed a sweep of the District 1-4A team titles on Saturday at Kirtland Central High School.

The Bobcat boys comfortably secured the district crown with 152 points, finishing clear of host Kirtland Central (134). On the girls’ side, Bloomfield narrowly edged out Aztec in a back-and-forth battle, 125.5 to 121.5.

Bloomfield’s Evani Velasquez solidified her status as the district’s premier sprinter. Velasquez swept the short sprints, winning the 100-meter dash (12.36 seconds), the 200 (25.95), and the 400 (1:03.37).

In the hurdles, Ryli Heckman was untouchable. She captured the 100-meter hurdles title in 14.82 seconds and added a victory in the high jump, clearing 5-0. Fellow Bobcat Renee Himes provided crucial points by winning the pole vault (8-0) and taking second in the 300 hurdles.

Aztec stayed in the hunt thanks to a dominant day from Kamber Martin, who won both the shot put (34-01) and the discus (107-07). Alisia Valerio added a gold for the Tigers in the triple jump with a leap of 36-01.25.

The Bloomfield boys used superior depth to fend off Kirtland Central. Andrew Himes was a force in the hurdles and jumps, winning both the 110 hurdles (14.96) and the 300 hurdles (42.56), while also claiming the triple jump title with a mark of 42-05.

Donavin Mickas provided the speed, winning the 200-meter dash in 23.01 and taking second in the 100. The Bobcats also showcased their explosiveness in the pits, where Markeith Childress won the long jump (20-01) and Paxton Morris took the high jump (5-11).

While Bloomfield dominated the sprints and jumps, the host Broncos and Shiprock Chieftains owned the distance events.

Kirtland Central’s Damien Henry captured the 1600-meter run in 4:39.25, while Shiprock’s Kaden Lapahie won the 3200 (10:13.23). The Broncos also took the top spot in the 4×800 relay (8:36.43).

In the throwing rings, the Bronco boys found gold with Jayden Taylor, who won the discus (117-08), and Xavier Horsechief, who took the javelin (132-00).

District 1-5A Finals Recap

The Farmington High School and Piedra Vista track teams traveled to Nusenda Community Stadium on Saturday, putting up several podium-topping performances at the District 1-5A Championships.

The Farmington boys led the local charge with a second-place team finish, while the Piedra Vista boys took fifth. On the girls’ side, the Scorpions and Panthers finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in a field dominated by Albuquerque-area powerhouses Rio Rancho and Cleveland.

Farmington’s Avery Sandefer was the standout for the Scorps’ girls squad. Sandefer captured the district title in the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet. She also secured silver in the 300-meter hurdles (48.16 seconds) and added a fifth-place finish in the long jump to her productive afternoon.

In the boys’ field events, Daniel Austin swept the horizontal jumps for Farmington. Austin won the long jump with a mark of 22-0 and followed it up with a victory in the triple jump at 43-05.

On the pole vault runway, Farmington’s Gilberto Quezada cleared 13-06 to take first place, leading a Scorpion contingent that claimed four of the top six spots in the event. Cash Garrett and Colter Davis finished third and fourth.

On the track, Leighton Webb secured a gold medal in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 2:00.09 to narrowly edge out Rio Rancho’s Cody Griego.

Piedra Vista’s Kael Farley proved to be the class of the district in the heavy throws. Farley swept the throwing events, taking first in the shot put with a toss of 50-11.50 and winning the discus with a dominant 162-02, finishing five feet clear of his nearest competitor.

The Panthers also displayed their speed in the 1600-meter sprint medley relay. The PV boys took first place in 3:38.30, beating out Cibola and Cleveland for the title.

In the high jump, Greysen Keiser earned a silver medal for the Panthers, clearing 6-06 to match Rio Rancho’s Jaylen Sealy, though Sealy took the top spot on fewer misses. On the girls’ side, Honor Robinson finished third in a competitive 400-meter dash, breaking the one-minute barrier at 59.42 seconds.

The focus for both programs now shifts to the NMAA State Track and Field Championships. Qualifiers from today’s meet will return to the UNM Track & Field Complex next weekend to compete for state honors.
