A Farmington school was vandalized in the early morning hours on Thursday, leaving staff to clean up the mess.
Approximately 60 individuals entered Piedra Vista High School at midnight and vandalized the school’s “halls and walls,” according to Farmington Municipal Schools spokesman Robert Taboada.
The district did not provide information as to how the individuals gained access to the interior of the school.
The vandalism, characterized as a “senior prank,” consisted of broken eggs, spray paint and toilet paper both inside and outside of the building, according to unconfirmed reports.
On Thursday, Tri-City Record made a records request to Farmington Municipal Schools for photographs of the damage.
Taboada did not provide a cost estimate of damage to school property.
He said “operations staff began the cleanup process this morning” and classes proceeded as scheduled.
Taboada said the vandalism was “referred to law enforcement,” but Farmington Police spokeswoman Shanice Gonzales said the “armed security guard for Piedra Vista High School” is investigating.
The guard is employed by Farmington Municipal Schools and commissioned by the Farmington Police Department. Gonzales said the guard answers to FPD’s school resource officer sergeant and has the authority to work with the San Juan County District Attorney’s Office to file criminal charges against involved individuals.
Taboada said the district would “communicate with students and staff as additional information becomes available.”
