FARMINGTON – Thursday’s district tennis showdown at the Farmington Sports Complex was a banner day for the Scorpions, who secured victories on both sides of the aisle. The FHS girls team dominated with an 8-1 finish, while the boys team won a much tighter battle that saw four different matches decided by third sets or tiebreakers.

The FHS boys team was led by a strong performance in singles competition. The Scorpions took five of the six singles matches to build a commanding lead. Conner Clark dominated the No. 1 spot with a 6-2, 6-1 win, while freshman Sam Nygren showed veteran composure in a straight-sets victory at No. 3.

The highlight of the singles play, however, was the resilience shown in the middle of the lineup:

Tayden Begay outlasted Holden Rogers in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-3), while Collin Clark survived a second-set slump to edge out Angel Howard 7-5 in the third. And Odin McMinn fought through a first-set tiebreaker to win in straight sets.

Piedra Vista’s lone singles point came from senior Brandt Edwards, who delivered a powerful 6-4, 6-0 performance over Henry Nixon.

Farmington added two more points in doubles play to seal the 7-2 win. The top duo of Conner Clark and Nixon bounced back after losing the first set to win a 10-7 match tiebreaker against PV’s top seniors. Nygren and Begay provided the most dominant performance of the day, winning 6-2, 6-0.

Piedra Vista ended the day with a win, where Jayden Arnell and Gavin Duncan won a thriller, taking the tiebreaker 10-6 to earn the Panthers’ second point of the dual.

The FHS girls team secured an 8-1 victory over Piedra Vista. Senior Marley Deswood set the tone early, topping Bella Harris in a 6-1, 6-1 decision. Deswood later returned to the court with partner Hannah Yazzie to claim a doubles victory (6-2, 6-2).

Yazzie was equally efficient in her solo outing, surrendering only two games in a straight-sets win over Kassidy Beckner.

While Farmington took the lion’s share of the points, the match of the day occurred at the in a marathon battle.

Piedra Vista’s Genevieve Petersen provided the lone bright spot for the Panthers. After dropping the first set 4-6 to Mya Beck, Petersen clawed back to win a grueling second-set tiebreaker (7-5). With momentum on her side, she edged out Beck in a 10-5 super-tiebreaker to put Piedra Vista on the board.

Haylie Wagner showed great composure, fending off a late surge from Ella Davidson to win 6-4, 7-6. Jazaida Flores and Teigan McCune both secured efficient 6-3, 6-1 singles wins.

The Scorpions put the finishing touches on the afternoon by sweeping the doubles rotation. The duo of Flores and Olivia Bermudez shut the door with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Autumn Robinson and Jadyn Saunders, finalizing the 8-1 scoreline.
