FARMINGTON – The Navajo Prep softball team dominated their Tuesday doubleheader against Tohatchi, showcasing an explosive offense that combined for 45 runs across two games.
The pair of wins keeps Navajo Prep’s record perfect in District 1-3A. The Eagles (16-5 overall, 6-0 District) are currently ranked eighth in the 3A classification according to the most recent Maxpreps polling.
The Eagles set the tone early and never looked back. While Tohatchi managed to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Navajo Prep responded with a massive 7-run second inning.
Aiyanna Etcitty ignited the rally with a solo home run in the second. Kyleigh Lincoln later put the finishing touches on the victory with a two-run blast to left field in the fifth.
Isabella Yazzie and Kira Begay were instrumental, with Yazzie driving in runs with a double and a single, while Begay added a two-run single and an RBI triple.
The game ended in the fifth inning following an error that allowed Shamaya Allen to reach and another run to cross the plate, securing the 14-run lead.
The second game of the day saw the Eagles’ offense reach a fever pitch, highlighted by a staggering 21-run third inning that effectively ended the contest.
Navajo Prep turned a 9-2 lead into a 30-2 blowout in the top of the third. The inning featured a three-run home run by Jazmine Deswood, a two-RBI single by Lincoln, and a two-RBI double by Begay.
The Eagles were aggressive on the paths; Begay and Lincoln combined for multiple steals, putting constant pressure on the Tohatchi defense and scoring several runs on wild pitches and passed balls.
Nearly every starter contributed to the box score. Leilani Wood had a standout game, recording an RBI double and two RBI singles, while Shamaya Allen capped off the scoring with a line-drive RBI single to center.
The Eagles’ pitching and defense held Tohatchi to just three runs over the course of both games.
The Piedra Vista High School softball team weathered a late-inning surge from Cibola to secure a 17-10 victory on the road Tuesday, fueled by a relentless offense and opportunistic baserunning.
The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning without recording a hit, using a bases-loaded walk by Raegan Lefebre and a costly three-run error on a fly ball off the bat of Charlie Randolph to silence the home crowd early.
The Cougars chipped away at the lead, scoring three in the first and two in the third, but Piedra Vista’s bats woke up in the middle frames. Emily Bailey delivered the biggest blow of the afternoon in the fourth, lining a three-run double to left field to extend the Panther lead to 11-5.
The Cougars refused to go quietly, plating two runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth to pull within 12-10. Celia Marquez trimmed the deficit to two with an RBI single that scored Maci Melvin, but that was as close as Cibola would get.
Piedra Vista slammed the door in the top of the seventh with a five-run outburst. Octaviana John sparked the rally with an RBI single, followed by a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch from Sydney McBee. Randolph then capped her productive day with a two-run single to center, providing the final margin of victory.
Randolph finished the day with three RBIs, while Bailey’s three-RBI double proved to be the turning point. Octaviana John and Raegan Lefebre also reached base consistently to keep the Panther carousels moving.
