ALBUQUERQUE – District titles will be on the line Thursday for both the boys and girls tennis teams at Farmington and Piedra Vista after resounding wins last weekend for both teams over Cibola and Volcano Vista.
The recent victories keep the Panther and Scorpions on path for a district championship meet this week at the Farmington Sports Complex.
The Farmington High School tennis program enjoyed a nearly perfect Friday on the courts at Ventana Ranch, with both the boys and girls varsity squads securing decisive victories over Cibola.
The Scorpions girls team remained untouchable, posting a 9-0 shutout, while the boys rolled to a 7-2 win.
The Lady Scorpions dominated from top to bottom, failing to drop a single match against the Cougars. Marley Deswood set the tone at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Abigail Goodwin.
The middle of the lineup was particularly efficient; Mya Beck, Hannah Yazzie, and Olivia Bermudez combined to lose only one game across six sets of singles play.
In doubles, the pairing of Haylie Wagner and Beck turned in the most clinical performance of the afternoon, blanking Luana Manzo and Raquelle Jaramillo 8-0.
On the boys’ side, Farmington utilized a veteran presence at the top of the roster to stifle the Cougars. Junior Conner Clark and senior Henry Nixon were flawless as a tandem, winning No. 1 doubles 6-0, 6-0. They backed that up with straight-set wins in their respective singles slots.
Freshman Sam Nygren continued his impressive debut season, dropping only one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles.
The match of the day occurred at No. 6 singles, where Farmington’s Noah Gallegos outlasted Casey Dolan in a marathon pro-set, winning 9-8 and taking the tiebreaker 7-3. Cibola’s lone points came from Tanner Dean at No. 5 singles and a hard-fought three-set win at No. 3 doubles.
Piedra Vista High’s tennis teams also put up a clinical performance Friday, sweeping the boys matches and taking a comfortable victory on the girls side against Cibola.
The Panthers boys team remained perfect on the day with a 9-0 sweep, while the girls squad secured a 7-2 win to complete the program’s successful outing.
The Panthers were dominant from the opening serve, led by junior Cyrus LeSueur, who notched a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. Brandt Edwards was even more efficient at No. 2, delivering a 6-0, 6-0 “double bagel” performance against Ernest Sauri.
The only real resistance came at No. 3 singles, where Jayden Arnell survived a second-set push from Kegan Ravelli to win 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. The bottom of the lineup—Holden Rogers, Angel Howard, and Casey Lee—combined to drop only two games across six sets of singles play.
In doubles action, the Panthers opted for pro-sets to close out the sweep. LeSueur and Edwards teamed up for an 8-1 win, while the freshman-eighth grade pairing of Gavin Duncan and Lee cruised to an 8-2 victory at the No. 3 spot.
The Panthers girls tennis team utilized their depth to overwhelm the Cougars, winning five of the six singles matches. Kassidy Beckner, Evelyn Gladden, and Hailey Yocum were nearly flawless at the No. 4 through No. 6 positions, with Gladden and Yocum both recording 6-0, 6-0 shutouts.
Cibola’s Abigail Goodwin provided the highlight for the visitors, edging out Bella Harris in an 8-5 pro-set at No. 1 singles. Goodwin later teamed with Autumn Solecki to take the No. 1 doubles match in a three-set battle, accounting for both of the Cougars’ points.
Piedra Vista responded by sweeping the remaining doubles matches. The senior duo of Autumn Robinson and Jadyn Saunders punctuated the afternoon with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles.
