A Farmington woman faces four felony charges after driving doughnuts and crashing her SUV in the Kirtland Central High School parking lot April 5.
Katrina Henry, 18, is charged with two counts of third-degree felony abuse of a child and two counts of fourth-degree felony contributing to the delinquency of a minor. She also is charged with reckless driving.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office was called to Kirtland Central High School about 8:35 p.m. April 5 after Zane Webster, a teacher, reported hearing screaming outside the agriculture building.
When Webster went outside, he told deputies he saw a black GMC Terrain speeding through the parking lot and “doing circles,” according to an arrest affidavit.
Four people were sitting on the window ledges of the Terrain, with their upper bodies outside the vehicle, according to the affidavit.
The SUV reportedly hit a speed bump, “caught air” and crashed into a cable barrier separating the bus loading zone from a parking lot, according to the affidavit.
Webster took a video of the incident and provided it to deputies, who also used school surveillance cameras, Flock license plate readers and the Farmington Police Department’s Real Time Crime Center to track the GMC Terrain after it drove away, the affidavit states.
Investigators said Henry was later contacted at Piedra Vista High School, where she is a student, and questioned about the crash.
During the interview, Henry reportedly admitted she was driving the Terrain and admitted to the crash. She told investigators she did not report it because “it didn’t cross her mind” and it “didn’t register as an accident,” according to the affidavit.
Two other youths involved in the incident told investigators they were “hanging out” and driving around but “accidentally drove through the cables and crashed” as they were leaving Kirtland Central High School, the affidavit says.
The youths also admitted to “sitting outside the windows” while the vehicle was moving, according to the affidavit.
No one was injured.
Henry was arrested April 15 and booked into the San Juan County Detention Center. She was released on her own recognizance the following day.
Her preliminary examination is set for 8:30 a.m. April 30 in Farmington Magistrate Court.
