FARMINGTON – The Piedra Vista High School boys tennis team completed a weekend sweep at the Farmington Sports Complex, following up a dominant Friday performance with a gritty 5-4 victory over Rio Rancho High School on Saturday.

After handling Cleveland High 7-2 the day prior, the Panthers found themselves in a much tighter contest against the Rams.

Junior Cyrus LeSueur provided the spark at No. 1 singles. After a tough loss on Friday, LeSueur rallied from a set down to defeat Rio Rancho’s Henry Hostetler 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Brandt Edwards continued his perfect weekend at No. 2 singles, cruising past Rex Gould 6-2, 6-2.

The match of the day came at No. 5 singles, where Angel Howard outlasted Josh Ziegler 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 to help Piedra Vista secure the necessary singles points.

The Rams proved formidable in the middle of the lineup, as Austin Searle and Boston Baugh picked up singles wins and teamed up for a three-set comeback victory at No. 2 doubles. However, the Panthers’ top duo of LeSueur and Edwards proved too strong, taking the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, 6-3 to help clinch the overall team win.

On Friday, the Panthers utilized their youth to dismantle Cleveland. Eighth-graders Holden Rogers and Casey Lee both earned singles wins, while Edwards showed his grit with a three-set comeback.

The Piedra Vista girls tennis teams also recorded a weekend sweep, relying on a wave of talented underclassmen to secure a pair of home victories, dismantling Cleveland 7-2 on Friday before fending off Rio Rancho 6-3 on Saturday.

Freshmen Genevieve Petersen, Evelyn Gladden, and Haleigh Yocum proved to be the bedrock of the Panthers’ success. The trio went undefeated in singles play across both days, providing PV with a consistent punch at the bottom of the lineup.

On Friday, sophomore Kassidy Beckner provided the highlight of the afternoon in a marathon match against Cleveland’s Clementine Le Floc’h. After splitting two tiebreaker sets, Beckner shut the door with a 6-0 sweep in the third to help the Panthers (2-0) pull away from the Storm.

The Panthers faced a stiffer challenge Saturday against the Rams. Rio Rancho took the top two singles spots and No. 1 doubles behind the sibling duo of Ella and Calli Jones, but Piedra Vista swept the remainder of the card.

The doubles pairing of Ella Davidson and Beckner remained perfect on the weekend, clinching a crucial three-set win Saturday over Makynzi Dudar and Katelyn Jensen, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. The veteran duo of Autumn Robinson and Jadyn Saunders also dominated at No. 3 doubles, surrendering only three games across four sets of work over the two-day stretch.

Scorpions prove best in weekend showdowns

The Farmington High School boys tennis team flexed its muscles this weekend at the Farmington Sports Complex, sweeping over Rio Rancho High 7-2 on Friday before a 9-0 shutout of Cleveland on Saturday.

Junior Conner Clark anchored the Scorpions at the top of the card, going undefeated across the two-day stretch. Clark’s resilience was on full display Saturday against Cleveland’s Orlando Mondragon; after dropping the opening set, Clark roared back for a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Senior Henry Nixon also remained flawless, surrendering only six games across four sets of singles play over the weekend. The duo teamed up at No. 1 doubles to secure two more points for the Scorpions, including a 6-1, 6-3 win over Rio Rancho’s top pair.

Nygren and Collin Clark both survived three-set tests on Saturday to help complete the sweep of the Storm. Nygren edged David Gonzales 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, while the Scorpios’ lower seeds, Tayden Begay and Odin McMinn, dominated their matches to keep Cleveland off the scoreboard entirely.

On Friday, Rio Rancho managed two points behind a singles win from Boston Baugh and a tight 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 doubles win from Baugh and Austin Searle, but the Scorpios’ depth proved too much to overcome.

Senior Marley Deswood set the pace at the top of the bracket, surrendering only four games in four sets of singles play over the weekend. Deswood’s dominance was matched by the Scorpions lower rotation, as Teigan McCune, Olivia Bermudez, and Jazaida Flores combined to allow just seven total games across six singles matches.

Friday’s contest against Rio Rancho featured the weekend’s most competitive battle at No. 1 doubles. Deswood and Hannah Yazzie outlasted the Rams’ sibling duo of Ella and Calli Jones in a three-set thriller, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The Rams’ lone point of the weekend came at No. 2 singles, where eighth-grader Calli Jones defeated Haylie Wagner.

On Saturday, the Scorpions left no room for error against Cleveland. Wagner bounced back from her Friday loss with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Nina Walker, while the doubles pairs of Wagner/Flores and McCune/Bermudez allowed only one combined game to the Storm.
