FARMINGTON – High school athletes from Aztec, Bloomfield and Navajo Prep have each signed letters of intent to take their athletic careers to the next level, having signed letters of intent to play college sports while continuing their education.
Aztec High School’s Jazzlyn Gomez, a multi-sport athlete who found a great deal of success on the basketball court, agreed to join the women’s college basketball program at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana.
Gomez signed her letter of intent last week at Lillywhite Gym, where she played on the Aztec basketball and volleyball teams for much of her high school career.
Gomez finished the most recent basketball season as one of the Tigers leading scorers on the court, averaging more than 12 points per game along with seven rebounds and six steals per game.
Gomez also had great success competing for the Aztec volleyball team. She finished her senior season earning District 1-4A first team honors. She also brings an exceptional work ethic in the classroom where she earned a 5.0 grade point average.
Gomez comes from a championship pedigree. Her father Joe Gomez was a WBC Intercontinental Welterweight titleholder.
Jazzlyn Gomez joins a Battlin’ Bears program coming off a 21-10 record last season. The team competed in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship tournament, advancing to the second round before being eliminated by top-seeded Dordt University in Iowa last month.
The Battlin’ Bears women’s basketball team is led by 12-year head coach Wes Keller, who has led the team to more than 200 wins and seven NAIA national tournament appearances.
Navajo Prep’s Beau Willie, who played three seasons on the Eagles football team, has agreed to extend his academic and athletic career at the University of Minnesota Morris.
Willie, who played roles on both the offense and defense for the Eagles, also was an active participant on the school’s powerlifting team.
The Cougars football team is coming off a 3-7 season last fall. The team is led by ninth year head coach Marty Hoffmann.
The 2023 season was a historic one for Minnesota Morris football as the team won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference title 7-4 overall record (5-0 UMAC).
With a victory over Northwestern in the regular season finale, the Cougars claimed the conference’s automatic berth into the NCAA Division III playoffs and gave the team its first postseason bid since 1981.
Bloomfield High senior Maliah Goins, who spent four years on the varsity girls soccer team, will extend her athletic career playing women’s soccer at Saint Mary of the Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Goins played 76 games for the Bobcats in four seasons, recording 35 goals in her prep career. Goins also played softball at Bloomfield and was a part of the girls wrestling program.
Goins was the team’s leading scorer last season, with 27 goals and three assists. She also grabbed 11 steals last season for the Bobcats.
Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is a private Catholic liberal arts college. Originally a college exclusively for women, it is now coeducational. It is the oldest Catholic college in Indiana.
The Pomeroy’s women’s soccer team finished last season with a record of 1-15-1 while competing in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics River States Conference.
The women’s soccer team is coached by Ronald Kiernicki, who also leads the men’s soccer team.
