Scorpions tennis teams roll past Santa Fe

The Farmington High tennis program emerged with a pair of lopsided victories Friday, as the boys swept Capital High School and the girls nearly blanked Rio Rancho’s Cleveland High.

The Farmington boys’ squad was nearly perfect against Capital, winning every set across both singles and doubles play. Senior leader Henry Nixon set the tone at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Adrian Duron.

The Scorpions’ depth proved too much for the Jaguars, as Tayden Begay and Zane White surrendered only one game each in their respective singles matches. The momentum carried into doubles, where the duo of Sam Nygren and Odin McMinn blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-1.

On the girls’ side, Farmington overcame a marathon match at the top of the bracket to claim an 8-1 team win over Cleveland.

While Cleveland’s Lily Walker edged out Farmington’s Marley Deswood in a 10-7 third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, the Scorpions responded by winning every other match on the card. Junior Haylie Wagner provided a spark with a “double bagel” 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles.

Deswood later got her revenge in doubles play, pairing with Hannah Yazzie to defeat Walker and Clementine Le Floc’h in another three-set battle, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.

The Scorpions girls team also rolled to shutout wins over Capital and Piedra Vista High.

Farmington asserted its dominance in the local rivalry, sweeping Piedra Vista while dropping only one set across all matches.

Deswood set a relentless pace at the top of the card, dismissing Piedra Vista’s Bella Harris 6-0, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. Beck secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kassidy Beckner, while junior Haylie Wagner and sophomore Teigan McCune combined to lose only three games in their respective singles matches.

The Panthers’ most spirited stand came in the No. 3 doubles match. Piedra Vista’s Jadyn Saunders and Autumn Robinson took the opening set 6-4, but the Farmington duo of McCune and Jazaida Flores stormed back with a 6-0 second set before clinching the match in a 10-2 tiebreaker.

The No. 1 doubles pairing of Deswood and Yazzie also remained perfect on the day, overcoming a competitive first set to win 6-4, 6-0 over Harris and Genevieve Petersen.
