Dear editor:
I was happy when I heard the Tri-City Record purchased the Daily Times, because Gannett produces awful newspapers, but I was disappointed when I read that you would still only publish three days a week. I also think it’s unwise that you’ve discarded the Daily Times name, which has a much longer history in Farmington than the Tri-City Record.
If I lived in Farmington, and I’ve considered that, I wouldn’t view your purchase as a plus for the people of the region. You’ve eliminated the region’s daily newspaper. You’re giving the region a newspaper that will come out half as often as the Daily Times. That’s a negative and a poor decision, in my view. The Farmington region is large enough to support a daily newspaper, even in 2024 – not two, as you tried to make happen (though not very hard), but certainly one.
Farmington is now the largest metro area in New Mexico without a daily newspaper and there are smaller cities that still have dailies, such as Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Gallup, Roswell, and Silver City. Your decisions will hurt Farmington.
