The Northern Navajo Fair has announced its first July 4 Celebration, a two-day Independence Day festival aimed to bring together the Four Corners community.

Described as an unforgettable weekend of traditional Native American culture, the event will be located at the Northern Navajo Fairgrounds in Shiprock. Events will start Friday and continue to Saturday.

“This inaugural celebration marks a significant milestone for the Northern Navajo Fair, which has served as the oldest and most traditional of all Navajo fairs since its establishment,” a Northern Navajo Fair Office news release said. “The July 4 event will complement the fair’s traditional fall harvest celebration, offering the community a summer gathering that honors both American patriotism and Navajo heritage.”

Event highlights:

5K Freedom Run on Wednesday, July 2, at 6 p.m., providing fitness enthusiasts and community members an opportunity to start the holiday weekend with a healthy, spirited activity.
Fireworks display, July 4 at 9 p.m., lighting up the desert sky with patriotic colors and breathtaking effects running for 20to 30 minutes.
Gourd Dance sessions and powwow ceremonies with Grand Entry at 5 p.m. both days, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Navajo Nation.
A Song & Dance Competition on Saturday, highlighting traditional performances and community talent, with registration opening at 9 a.m. and Grand Entry at 11 a.m.
Western Junior Rodeo Association event on Saturday morning at 9 a.m., showcasing young cowboys and cowgirls competing across five age divisions from 6 to 18 years old with professional announcer, Mr. Roman “The Pink Tie Guy” McCabe calling the action. Events include barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping, team roping, and more.
Country & Western Dancing on both evenings featuring live country and western music at the Rodeo Arena. Friday night showcases Stillwater Band and Krossroads from after the fireworks until 1 a.m., while Saturday night features Stateline and Latigo from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

“This inaugural July 4 Celebration represents our commitment to bringing the community together to honor both our American heritage and our Navajo traditions,” said Miss Northern Navajo 2024-2025, Damaris Yazzie. “We welcome everyone to come out and enjoy the events in a fun and safe family environment.”

Community partnerships have made the festival possible including Arizona Public Service, Bitahbito Chapter, Cellular One, Diné Development Corp., Navajo Arts and Crafts Enterprise and Navajo Division of Economic Development.

The Northern Navajo Fair Office expects the event to reach over 5,000 attendees and has advertised it as an alcohol- and drug-free event with security on site. In case of severe weather, fireworks will be held Saturday, July 5, the office said.

“This is the first ever Northern Navajo Fourth of July Celebration, and we invite you all to come out and enjoy a day of social song and dance, powwow, Junior Rodeo, Country Western Dances, and the Firework show with family and friends,” said Miss Northern Navajo Teen 2024-2025, Kaydence Yazzie.
